Principal Michael Williams poses with five students who received their diplomas during the iGrad summer graduation ceremony.

For some students, a traditional high school environment doesn’t feel like the right fit. Kent School District offers those students a different path. At iGrad, students can pursue their education in a way that is flexible and personalized, while receiving support from a dedicated staff who believe every learner can succeed.

That heartfelt belief was on full display during iGrad’s Open House and Summer Graduation celebration on September 15, when staff, families, and community partners came together to recognize an important educational milestone. Of the five students recognized, four earned their Kent School District diplomas, while one completed her GED.

"Coming here to iGrad, students have an opportunity to find the love of learning again," said Principal Mike Williams. "I tell them all the time during intake: this is a steppingstone to something more. Whether it's Green River College, a career, or whatever they want it to be, we'll help them get there."

Students of iGrad can pursue a variety of pathways based on their individual needs and goals. Those who earn a GED can continue receiving support through iGrad while working toward additional educational goals, including a high school diploma or college coursework.

"I feel like the staff here is super encouraging toward all of the students," said the GED recipient. "They push you no matter what to do your best. They're a really good support system." She plans to continue her education at Green River College, where she will remain connected to iGrad staff as a dual-enrolled student while working toward her diploma.

Staff members say one of the program's greatest strengths is the acceptance and sense of inclusiveness students experience.

"I think the biggest thing the kids tell us all the time is that they feel like they belong," said multilingual education specialist Terina Claggett. "The first thing I say every morning is, 'Welcome. We're so glad you're here.'"

That supportive environment helps students who may have struggled in larger school settings reconnect with their education. Small class sizes, individualized support, and strong rapport with staff allow students to progress at their own pace while preparing for college, careers, and life beyond high school.

"Our students are so different in every way. Everyone has their own story. Having a small, structured environment where you build relationships with students is really important,” said Nichole Byzinker, a special education teacher at iGrad. "Helping students that maybe slip through the cracks in other places and helping them find their way is probably my largest goal here.”

As the graduates celebrated their achievements alongside family, friends, and staff, the evening served as a reminder that student success looks different from person to person. By providing flexible learning opportunities, individualized support, and meaningful connections, iGrad fully reflects Kent School District's commitment to preparing all students for their futures, wherever their journey begins and wherever it may lead.
