SB-SBIRT
School-Based Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Services
Kent School District (KSD) believes that the physical and mental health of our young people is essential for their success in school. We are committed to supporting your child not just academically, but also in reaching their full potential outside the classroom.
What is the SB-SBIRT screener?
As in the past, we are using a screener called School-Based Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Services (SB-SBIRT) with:
Canyon Ridge seventh-grade students
Cedar Heights seventh-grade students
Mattson seventh-grade students
Meeker seventh-grade students
Meridian seventh-grade students
Mill Creek seventh-grade students
Northwood seventh-grade students
Kent Virtual Academy seventh-grade students
Kent Laboratory Academy seventh-grade and ninth-grade students
Kentwood High School tenth-grade students
The SB-SBIRT is a screener that can help identify, reduce, and prevent substance use or mental health crisis and support students’ physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. The administration of the SB-SBIRT is a collaborative effort with King County, KSD staff, and KSD mental health partners. The screener is optional.
How does the SB-SBIRT screening process work?
Screening Tool: Students will take a screening tool on their laptops during the school day.
Brief Intervention: If a student is identified as “at risk,” they will meet with a school counselor, or other qualified KSD staff or mental health partner within 24-hours.
Parent/Guardian Notification: Parents/guardians will be informed if their child is in danger of harming themselves or others.
Resource Information: All students will receive information about resources available at school and in the community.
When will the SB-SBIRT screening take place?
All screenings will take place during first semester. Please note that the results of this screening will not be part of your child’s school records, and only the SB-SBIRT Team will have access to this information
How can students be opted out of participating?
If you do not want your child to participate in this program, please complete the opt-out form in the parent/guardian Skyward Qmlativ Family Access account between Monday, September 22, 2025, and Friday, October 10, 2025, or ask for a physical copy from your child’s school counselor.
If you have more than one seventh grade student at any KSD middle school or Kent Virtual Academy, seventh or ninth grade student at Kent Laboratory Academy or tenth grade student at Kentwood High School, you will need to complete the form for each student.
Who do I contact for assistance?
For more information or questions about the SB-SBIRT Check Yourself screener, please reach out to your child’s school counselor or stay tuned for communication from your child’s school about upcoming family events where more information will be provided.
