East Hill Elementary recently brought students and staff together for a powerful Black History Month assembly centered on celebration, reflection, and action.
Designed to both honor Black leaders and inspire students to consider their own impact, the assembly created space for learning and student voice.
“Today was to bring the school together, celebrate Black leaders, and then have a call to action,” Principal Jina Lee explained. “Thinking about what our contribution can be as a collective.”
As part of the assembly, students participated in a sentence patterning activity that encouraged them to name a Black leader who is meaningful to them and reflect on how they want to make a difference. The exercise invited students to move beyond learning about history and toward considering their own role in shaping the future.
The event highlighted the importance of understanding shared history while fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment among students. By creating intentional space for reflection and celebration, East Hill Elementary demonstrated how assemblies can go beyond recognition to inspire action.
The assembly also reflected the district’s OneKSD commitment to uplifting voices, honoring diverse histories, and ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and respected. Through thoughtful planning and student engagement, East Hill set the tone for a month focused not only on learning, but on building a stronger, more inclusive school community.
