Kent School District’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) photography programs continue to empower students to express themselves, build industry-ready skills, and explore future pathways. This past year, that work reached an exciting milestone: students Riley Boyle and Paige Wu had their photographs featured on Jones Soda bottles, and Shea Morrissey earned Best in Show at the Washington State High School Photography Competition. Winning Best in State was a moment Shea Morrissey never imagined, but one that changed everything. “I never would have assumed I would have won… but I did, and it felt really awesome,” she said. “Seeing all the other work hung up made it feel like a feasible dream.” Her award came with a new Canon camera, equipment she now uses professionally. “I’ve used that to do senior portraits, so I’m making money with it. It’s been incredible.” These accomplishments highlight not only exceptional young artists but also the strength of CTE courses that provide students with hands-on learning and opportunities to shine beyond the classroom. Photography teacher Royce Thompson sees these recognitions as especially meaningful for students who are experiencing celebration of their work for the first time. “It’s always validating, especially in CTE where there aren’t a lot of traditional accolades,” Thompson said. “For the students, it’s eye-opening to see all the incredible projects out there. It gives them real context for the level of talent and effort that exist beyond our classroom.” Thompson brings real-world expectations into his classes, helping students develop the habits and skills they’ll need for college, careers, and life. "CTE isn’t about preparing for a test—it’s about producing real, tangible work. My students learn time management, accountability, and how to meet deadlines… it feels like real-world experience, not just schoolwork." Whether it’s seeing their work on store shelves, winning statewide awards, or turning creativity into paid opportunities, these students continue to demonstrate the power of CTE. By offering students the tools, structure, and freedom to create, these programs open doors, showing what’s possible when talent meets opportunity.
