Kent School District supports student voice and civic engagement while keeping safety and learning at the center of the school day. The district is aware of a student-organized walkout on Tuesday, January 27. While peaceful demonstrations are permitted, they must take place in locations and at times that do not pose safety risks, disrupt classes, or other school activities.

The district’s top priority is ensuring the school day continues as usual and that all students and staff remain safe. Although the district respects students’ rights to express themselves, this walkout is student-organized and not a school-sponsored event.

Student Expression and Safety

Students may choose to participate in demonstrations or walkouts. While we respect their rights:

  • Our staff’s role is to maintain student safety.

  • Staff will be present on campus but do not supervise students who leave school grounds.

  • Walkouts are student‑organized and not school‑sponsored events.

  • Learning continues as usual during these events.

Civic Learning Opportunities

Students learn about civic engagement in many ways—writing to lawmakers, participating in discussions, and exploring multiple viewpoints. These activities help students build skills to form and express their own positions respectfully and responsibly.

Attendance Expectations

Walkouts are not excused absences.

  • Parents may contact the school to excuse an absence.

  • All other walkout‑related absences will be marked unexcused.

  • Students must make up any missed academic work.

Staff Participation

Employees wishing to attend demonstrations during the workday must use appropriate leave.
