In May 2025, the Kent School District administered two surveys:

  • The Family Climate Survey was sent to all families with students enrolled in KSD schools. This survey asks families about their child’s school relating to safety, learning environment, community engagement, and more.

  • The Staff Climate Survey was sent to all KSD staff members. This survey asks staff about their school or workplace relating to safety, learning environment, community engagement, and more.

The Kent School District has conducted both family and staff climate surveys for over 10 years. Generally, the survey questions remain the same from year to year for comparison purposes. This year, questions were added to the family survey regarding communication and instruction, while the staff survey gained two additional questions on achievement and effectiveness. Respondents had just over two weeks to complete the surveys.

  • The family survey garnered 2,392 responses, representing about 15% of KSD families.

  • The employee survey had 1,198 responses, representing nearly a quarter of active KSD employees.

Both surveys’ response rates peaked in 2024 and saw similar declines in responses in 2025.

Family Climate Survey Results

Overall, families responded more positively on the 2025 survey compared to the 2024 survey. The survey items regarding timely and effective services and support from the district office had the highest rates of positive change compared to last year (+7.6% points and +7.4% points, respectively). Other survey items with improved positive responses included district communications, social-emotional and behavior resources in schools, culturally responsive curriculum and climate, and student discipline.

Staff Climate Survey Results

The 2024 Strategic Plan includes three key performance indicators from the annual staff climate survey: staff belongingness, satisfaction among first-year staff, and the Net Promoter Score.

  • 64% of staff reported feeling they “completely belong” or “belong quite a bit” in their school or on their district office team – consistent with data from the past two years.

  • First-year employee satisfaction is based on responses to the “satisfaction index” –10 items rated high to low regarding employees’ satisfaction in their role, with KSD

leadership, support, and decision-making. The satisfaction index increased for first-year employees in 2025 to 69 out of a possible 100 points – a 6-point increase from the Strategic Plan baseline of 63.

  • The Net Promoter Score measures the promotion of KSD by asking how likely respondents are to recommend a job at KSD to a friend or acquaintance based on workplace culture. Low scores are subtracted from high scores to create a range of -100 to +100. Based on the 2025 staff survey, KSD’s net promoter score is -25, an increase over the baseline of -47.
