Kent-Meridian High School has launched an exciting new initiative, the Neustra Raíces Leadership Academy. Aimed at encouraging eighth grade Latino students to be successful in high school, the leadership program pairs incoming Latino freshman with Latino high school students to learn how to develop agency, advocacy, and access the many resources Kent-Meridian has to offer. The secondary mission of the program is developing Latino high school students into leaders as they guide the incoming freshman. There were over 40 Kent-Meridian volunteer student mentors from all grade levels this year.
“Our goal is to encourage incoming Latino freshman about the importance of high school graduation, to promote attendance in school, and to develop a plan to meet their aspirational goals of success.” Assistant Principal Ricardo Robles said.
Latinos are the largest minority in Washington State, and there are currently 565 Latino students at Kent-Meridian High School, making them the second most populous cultural group. Regrettably, Latinos fall behind all other groups in educational achievement. They have the highest dropout rate and very low participation in civic, political, and community activities.
“There are many reasons as to why this occurs such as lack of role models or mentors, weak organizations, and cultural barriers,” but most the important need is for more Latino leaders at all levels.” Assistant Principal Ricardo Robles said.
The Neustra Raíces Leadership Academy aims to combat these problems by creating young Latino leaders who will contribute to their school and community. The program’s project partners include Centro Rendu, Community in Schools Kent, and the College and Career Readiness program. Neustra Raíces is supported by the school’s administration team, deans of students, counselors, and the student achievement specialist.
