OneClass, OneTeam, OneCommunity United in OneKSD
A Message from the Superintendent
At KSD, our mission is successfully preparing ALL students for their futures by equipping them with knowledge, skills, and opportunities to thrive (OneClass). Achieving this requires strategic planning and responsible financial management. I want to thank our Board of Directors for their leadership in prioritizing fiscal responsibility to ensure equitable, high-quality education for all students.
While currently financially stable, our district continues to face long-term financial challenges as enrollment remains below pre-pandemic levels and costs continue to rise. With state and federal funding lagging, a structural deficit threatens our financial stability. Continued strategic planning and action are essential. A key factor contributing to our current financial stability is the dedicated efforts of our Human Resources team and our labor partners (OneTeam). Together, we successfully negotiated three-year agreements with multiple employee groups, including the Kent Education Association, Teamsters, Kent Association of Coaches, and Kent Principals Association. These agreements reflect the collaborative efforts and strong relationships between district leadership and employee associations, which are crucial for the success of our students and staff.
Additionally, KSD has received clean state audits and maintains a strong S&P Global credit rating—proof of sound financial stewardship.
We also rely on community support (OneCommunity), with 19.5 percent of our funding coming from voter-approved levies and bonds. Thank you for passing the 2024 Capital Projects and Technology Replacement Levy, which helps keep schools operational and ensures students have the technology needed for future careers.
In the Kent School District, we remain steadfast in our belief that every student belongs and deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported. Our commitment to creating inclusive environments where all students thrive is at the core of our work. At KSD, we don’t just say “every student is welcome” —we live it every day.
As we continue building a strong foundation for student success, I am focused on three key priorities:
Position Control
Ensuring we have the right staff in the right places to serve our students best, maintaining financial stability while prioritizing student learning.
Family Engagement
Building strong partnerships between our schools and families to ensure every family feels connected to their child’s education.
Early Learning
Expanding and strengthening early learning programs to prepare our youngest learners for success.
These priorities reflect our unwavering commitment to students, families, and the future of KSD. We are dedicated to continuous systems improvement and providing every student with the opportunity to thrive. Together, as OneKSD, we will keep moving forward, ensuring that each and every child receives the support and opportunities they need to succeed.
