If the federal government shutdown continues, food assistance benefits in Washington will end on Oct. 31, 2025. Losing food assistance will have devastating impacts on the well-being of hundreds of thousands of Washington residents and will hurt local economies across the state. DSHS has more information about the impacts as well as what clients can do to prepare for the loss of benefits.

Earlier this week, the city of Covington, in partnership with Kentwood High School, held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Kentwood's newly renamed street, "Conqueror Avenue."  Led by the Kentwood ASB team, students voted on the name for the street. "We are so excited that this project was able to be completed before our seniors graduated. We are so proud of them," said ASB advisor Kayla Hanus. We close Music in our Schools month by shining on a spotlight on the Kentwood Choir, led by Choral Director Daisy Li-Emans. Later today, 23 students of the Kentwood Choir will perform Vivaldi's "Gloria" at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The choir was invited to audition based on their reputation and then was selected to perform based on the audition tape they sent in. Last week, the choir performed with a chamber orchestra and other choral groups at their mid-winter concert at the Kentwood Performing Arts Center. “I was excited for our chamber orchestra to collaborate with our choir students and do this baroque classical piece together,” Daisy said. Congratulations to our musical students! #OneClass #OneKSD Read more at https://www.kent.k12.wa.us/article/2099604

All schools and the administration campus are open today, Friday, February 14. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for our area until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, February 14. This weather system is expected to bring snow and freezing temperatures overnight and into the morning hours. Due to a scheduled three-hour early release for all elementary schools as part of elementary conferences, a two-hour delayed/late start cannot be implemented due to conflicts within our transportation system, which operates multiple routes for both elementary and secondary schools. We encourage you to stay informed by checking local weather reports and monitoring your email or other preferred communication channels early tomorrow morning, Friday, February 14. In the event of any changes to school schedules or district operations, we will make a decision by 5:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14.

We are planning a 2-hour late start for tomorrow, Thursday, February 6 because we are currently under a winter weather advisory until 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, with the strong possibility of more snow and freezing temperatures. We are sending this communication the evening before to provide families and staff with time to plan for the potential effects of a two-hour late start. This advance notice aims to help those that need to make arrangements to accommodate this schedule change. Find more information at https://www.kent.k12.wa.us/article/2013013
