Kent School District (KSD) has taken a proactive step toward strengthening its special education program by completing a comprehensive review designed to ensure we are meeting the needs of our students. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in efforts to support all students and families.
Our priority is providing every student with the support they need to grow and succeed. The review, conducted in partnership with Public Consulting Group (PCG), examined key areas aligned to the Special Education Effectiveness Domains: Human Capital, High Expectations, Systems and Structures, Family and Communicty Engagement, Learning Environment and Specialized services and Leadership. Using mixed methodology of surveys, interviews, classroom observations, and data analysis, the study provided a comprehensive picture of what is working well and opportunities for improvement.
We take these findings seriously and are committed to acting on the recommendations that will be provided by PCG at a school board work session in January.
Strengths and Opportunities for Improvement
The review affirmed our strong commitment to inclusion, positive school cultures, meaningful family relationships, and a shared desire for partnership. However, it also identified challenges such as staffing gaps, inconsistent implementation of interventions, need for professional development, and increased instructional rigor. Action Plan
To build on the insights from this review, Public Consulting Group is crafting recommendations that will lay the groundwork for a student-centered action plan. This plan is not just about change; it is about system accountability and creating meaningful progress for every learner. Central to this effort is collaboration. We will partner closely with stakeholders to make these changes effective and sustainable, because improving outcomes for students requires a united commitment.
