A Kent Elementary School student participates in a SUMM Family Math Night game.

Families at Kent Elementary recently gathered for a SUMM Family Math Night, an evening designed to help students and their families experience math in engaging, hands-on ways.

Hosted in partnership with the Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM), the event featured a variety of interactive games and activities that encouraged participants to explore mathematical thinking beyond traditional classroom lessons. Families worked together on challenges involving patterns, strategy, counting, and problem-solving, showing that math can be found in many everyday activities.

“[These math nights] allow kids to experience math in a different way than they're used to,” said SUMM educator Zane Swaims. Through the evening's activities, families discovered how mathematical thinking shows up in everyday life. Games that involved strategy, counting, pattern recognition, and problem-solving helped demonstrate that math is not limited to classroom assignments but is a skill people use regularly at home, in recreation, and in the world around them.

SUMM partners with schools and community organizations to create equitable learning opportunities that build curiosity and confidence in mathematics. Through culturally responsive programming, the organization helps students and families connect with math in meaningful ways while recognizing the contributions and excellence of cultures around the world.

The Family Math Night reflects Kent School District’s commitment to equity, excellence, and community. By creating opportunities for students and families to learn together, the event helped make math more accessible, engaging, and connected to real-world experiences.

Events like Family Math Night support Kent School District’s mission of successfully preparing all students for their futures by helping students develop confidence, critical thinking skills, and a positive relationship with learning that extends beyond the classroom.
