Shalom Mhlanga’s story began in Zimbabwe and she’s had a remarkable journey on her way to graduating from Kent-Meridian High School this month. Shalom moved to the U.S. when she was in elementary school and had to quickly adapt to her new community.
"I was given an opportunity to further my education in America,” she said. "I want to make my family proud and continue working hard.”
Throughout school, she loved playing soccer and softball, but always stayed focused on her studies. She is one of two students in Kent School District to receive a Presidential Scholarship from the University of Washington this year. She plans to study psychology and hopes to pursue a career in the medical field.
“As this new chapter of my life is unfolding, I’m excited and grateful to see how far I’ve come and I’m looking forward to what the future holds,” Shalom said.
