Dear KSD Families and Staff,
Over this last year, our entire KSD community has come together to face a constantly shifting landscape. We have adapted to evolving guidelines, and we have worked together to keep each other safe and to stay healthy. And still, we need to remain united and continue to make perfect progress as we work with our labor partners to finalize the intricate details of our hybrid learning plan. The last thing that our staff or I want is to create more instability for our students and families.
As of today, March 11, 2021, though we continue to bargain actively, we do not yet have a tentative agreement with any of our labor partners to return to in-person learning. To ensure our staff receives all required health and safety training, has time to set up classrooms, and to be sure students and families receive enough notification and information before the first day, the soonest limited in-person learning for PreK, K, and Grade 1 students can begin is Monday, April 12.
We are working towards some ASC and SC programs to begin sooner; families will be notified directly by each school when these programs open. If COVID-19 activity levels continue to remain at the moderate activity level as they are now, we plan to bring additional grades back every two weeks after that. This means at least some students at all grade levels will be receiving limited in-person learning by mid-May if we begin limited in-person learning on April 12. We will share the return dates of grades 2-12 once we have a signed agreement with labor partners.
These additional weeks of preparation before spring break, April 5-9, will help build confidence in our approach to safely reopening schools and provide an opportunity for our school staff to engage with families before the first day of in-person instruction after more than one year of remote learning.
When a tentative agreement is reached, we will provide details about the hybrid model, including the new learning schedule, to all KSD families before families are asked to decide if remote learning or the limited in-person learning schedule work best for their family.
The safety of our students, staff, and families, along with our focus on teaching and learning, has been and will continue to be our priority. You can watch and listen to a full update from Superintendent Dr. Watts at the March 10, 2021 board meeting. We have posted new answers to frequently asked questions on our Back to School website. Additional information will be coming before spring break to ensure all KSD families in all grades are prepared for a safe return to in-person learning.
I am grateful for our families' patience, for the collaboration of labor partners, and for the hard work of our staff to prepare for hybrid learning.
Please regularly visit our website, check your emails, voicemail, and mobile app for news, resources, and information.
Stay healthy and stay safe,
Dr. Calvin J. Watts
