Back to School Tips & Information
Preparing To Go Back To School September 2020
The first day of school will look different this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but we remain committed to successfully preparing all students for their futures. These tips for going back to school will help you learn more about what to expect and help your family prepare for remote learning success.
Please understand there are many moving pieces to these plans, and we will need to adapt as the situation surrounding COVID-19 evolves, and as we continue to receive new guidance from the Washington State Department of Health and OSPI. We will be prepared to return to in-person instruction quickly if conditions allow us to do so.
It will take all of us, students, families, staff, and our community, working together to support a safe and successful 2020-2021 school year. Thank you for your continued partnership during this health crisis.

Plan For School Meals
Even though our school buildings will not be open, nutritious meals will be available to all students every Wednesday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at select schools and bus stops during remote learning. Apply for free and reduced-price meals, check your student's meal account, and more from the Nutrition Services page. Families need to re-apply for free and reduced-price meals each school year.
Prepare For Remote Learning Success
Instruction in 2020-21 will be different than the continuous learning students experienced at the end of last school year.
The KSD remote learning model is defined by teachers and students engaged in instruction through technology-based learning strategies, a Learning Management System (Canvas), and a virtual meeting platform (Microsoft Teams). Emails, phone conferences, video conferencing, independent learning, and supplemental learning applications may also be assigned to support remote learning. Weekly schedules will go out on Fridays for the following week in Canvas so you and your child can plan for the week ahead.
Your student's school and teacher will send more information and details, including their assigned teacher and detailed schedule before the start of school. Learn more about what to expect by reading through our reopening plan.
To help us produce our plan, we surveyed staff and families over the summer, hosted a Thoughtexchange, and hosted our internal and external stakeholders on the Back to School Task Force to collaboratively develop the plan. We have also been working closely with our local health department to inform our health and safety protocols.
Explore Our Hub for Family Learning & Resources
Prepare for remote learning through our new Family Tech Academy resource. With a focus on the technology and learning tools that enhance the online experience, including Canvas and Microsoft 365, this tool is a hub for family learning and resources in KSD.
Attend free live virtual trainings to learn how to use Microsoft Teams and other Office 365 applications.
Know How To Get Laptop & Technology Support
To help ensure students can fully engage in remote or online learning, we will continue to provide laptops for all K-12 students. Free and low-cost home internet options are also available for our families.
Students and families also have access to in-person technology support by appointment in alignment with safety and social distancing protocols.
Please continue to check your email for more information from you school about laptop distribution dates if you don't already have a KSD-issued device.
Collect School Supplies
Make sure you have the supplies your student needs to be successful during remote learning. Schools are sending home school supply lists and updated lists may also be available on your school's website.
Donated supplies are available thanks to the Communities in Schools of Kent Fill the Bus Supply Drive and the Kent Area PTSA. If you need assistance with school supplies, please complete this form.
Connect With Your Teacher & School
Check your email, phone, and mail for messages from your school or teacher. They may have also sent information about back to school events or office hours.
Please check you spam/junk folder and note that your student’s teacher may use Microsoft Teams to make calls which could appear as an out of state phone number.
If you haven't received any communications from your student's school or teacher please reach out to their office manager.
