Message from Our Superintendent

Thank you for your support and patience as we navigate this first week of building closures. Together with our leaders we continue unpacking the mandates and guidelines around this unprecedented health crisis as we make and implement decisions that best support our students, families, and our staff.

We have come to agreement on one major priority set by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction which is childcare for school-age children of first responders and health care workers.

I am also happy to share that this means an expansion of one additional meal service location for children in our KSD community beginning Monday, March 23. Details regarding the childcare and the meal service offerings are below.

Childcare for School-age Children of First Responders and Health Care Workers

During long-term school closures, childcare will be critically important so frontline healthcare workers and first responders can focus on slowing the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.

Governor Inslee has directed school districts to work to provide free childcare services as a last resort for children in grades K-6 to first responders and health care workers so they can continue to help community members who are most in need.

Who Is A First Responder?

First responders, as defined in RCW 70.54.430, includes firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical personnel, as licensed or certificated by the state.

Who Is A Health Care Worker?

Members of the healthcare workforce, as defined by the Washington State Medical Association, includes people who work in any setting where healthcare services, long-term care, long-term services and supports, or personal care are delivered. This includes, but is not limited to, hospitals, clinics, behavioral health centers, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, adult family homes, and personal homes.

Childcare services for first responders and healthcare workers will be provided by the YMCA of Greater Seattle and Champions from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays at each of the following sites, learn more and register online www.kent.k12.wa.us/ClosureChildcare

Free Meals for Everyone Ages 0-18 During Closure

As the unprecedented coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has forced the closing of Kent School District (KSD), we want to reassure you that all children in our community, up to age 18, whether or not on the Free or Reduced Meal Program, will be fed. No KSD student will be turned away.

Available Monday-Friday
Free breakfast and lunch meals are distributed together Monday-Friday at select school and community partner sites across our district throughout the closure. Please note that community partner site schedules are not managed or staffed by Kent School District. As the COVID-19 pandemic is a rapidly evolving situation it is possible service times and locations at either a KSD site or a community partner site may change. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate the opportunity to lead, serve and support our Kent School District. Our staff continues to rise to the occasion and meet each adaptive challenge head on. May I remind us all that we are leading in the midst of unprecedented circumstances. With that comes the opportunity and responsibility to remain patient, to extend grace, and to assume positive intent.
