Students Help Local Animals

Meridian Elementary School students were rewarded with a visit from some furry friends after donating more than 2,385 pet items to the Seattle Humane Society on June 14.

As part of their fifth-grade community project, students collected pet food donations from the community and made blankets for animals waiting for their forever homes.

Audrey Farris, a behavioral interventionist at Meridian, said, “I work for the students and I love helping them build leadership skills through project-based learning like this. It’s so powerful to watch.”

Michelle Corder’s son is a second grader at Meridian and she shared a video of him explaining the project to help bring in donations from friends and family.  

“It’s good because sometimes these animals don’t get adopted, and they need food and soft things to play with,” she said. 

Seattle Humane Society staff at the event explained how families can foster pets who are waiting to be adopted and said they’re always looking for name suggestions. They also thanked students for their donations and said toys and towels are some of the most needed items.  

“It was really cool,” one student said, and then added, “But, I really want a dog.”
