- Kent School District
HIV/AIDS Prevention Education
Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDS prevention education in grades 5 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and Kent School District policy require that parents are provided with an opportunity to preview these lessons. Our district approach to HIV/AIDS prevention education is intended to strengthen families and to be supportive of parental responsibility.
HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Unit
According to Washington law (RCW 28A.230.070), if you wish to excuse your student from this learning opportunity, you must first review the HIV/AIDS materials. Parents were invited to attend one of the following Parent Preview drop-in sessions held on:
- Thursday, October 25, 2018, 4:00-7:00 p.m.
- Saturday, October 27, 2018, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
If you were unable to attend the sessions, you may preview the HIV/AIDS material by appointment at the Central Administration Office. Please allow at least 30 minutes to thoroughly review the materials.
If you would like to schedule a preview, please contact:
- Annette Williams: (253) 373-7264 or Annette.Williams@kent.k12.wa.us
- Christopher White: (253) 373-7074 or Christopher.White@kent.k12.wa.us
Should you wish to excuse your student from these lessons after reviewing the materials, you must sign an HIV/AIDS “opt-out” form that will be kept on file with the district. Excused students will be provided with alternative assignments.
- In grades 5-6, this unit is taught by the classroom teacher.
- In grades 7-8, this unit is taught during health class.
- In grades 9-12, this unit may be taught in health class or during advisory periods.
Reproductive Health Unit
In addition to the HIV/AIDS unit our health curriculum in grades 5-12 also includes a Reproductive Health Unit. You do not need to preview the Reproductive Health materials to excuse your student from this unit. However, if you do wish to review these lessons, they will be available for review by appointment at the Central Administration Office.
If you wish to excuse your student from the Reproductive Health unit, but not the HIV/AIDS unit, please send a written letter of notification directly to me at the district office.
If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher directly or Christopher White.
