Healthy Hearts and Pies in the Face
Not many people would willingly agree to be pied in the face, but Randy Furukawa did it for a great cause. He is a PE teacher at Emerald Park Elementary and the coordinator of an event earlier this year at his school called the Kids Heart Challenge. This challenge allowed students and families to learn about heart health and also allowed them to raise funds to protect all hearts, especially other children. Randy coordinated a kickoff assembly and also did health-related activities in PE. He also shared daily updates on their fundraiser, passed out prizes earned in PE, and recognized students' accomplishments toward their goals.
Randy also coordinated great school prizes! The class who raised the most funds received an extra PE day and the second place class received a healthy food party. He also presented individual prizes. The third top fundraiser received pizza delivered to their home courtesy of Randy, second place was able to silly string another staff member, Christopher Azcueta, and first place had the honor to pie Randy in the face during the closing assembly. Randy's enthusiasm and effort helped his students to learn more about heart health and raise over
$10,000, double Emerald Park's goal.
Randy is an excellent example of how our teachers go the extra mile to motivate students and make learning fun and exciting for them. Fantastic work, Emerald Park, on the Kids Heart Challenge. Also, congratulations to the second place fundraiser, Kasen, and the top fundraisers, Cameron and Audrey! Lastly, thank you, Randy, for all of your hard work and commitment to students.
