Northwood Teacher Named the 2016-2017 Washington State Middle Level Leadership Adviser of the Year
Ryan Simpson of Northwood Middle School is named the 2016-2017 Washington State Middle Level Leadership Adviser of the Year. The award recognizes Simpson’s exemplary efforts in facilitating leadership growth for all students while elevating the climate and culture at Northwood Middle School and its community. Some examples include participating in Northwest Harvest and the Out of Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention.
“My high school leadership program originally peaked my interest in the topic… leading me to 16 years of teaching student leadership. We need to be teaching to the heart as much as we are teaching to the mind, and that’s why to me, character education is so important; our students are more than SAT scores,” said Simpson.
Simpson will be formally honored as the Middle Level Adviser of the Year at the annual conference of the Washington Activity Coordinators Association (WACA), March 15-17 in Vancouver, Washington.
“I wouldn’t have received the award without my students. I look forward to working with administrators to develop and further our leadership and character education programs in all of our schools, so students leave with more than just academic skills, but rather a greater sense of kindness, self-advocacy, and unconditional love” said Simpson.
