Boundary Change Review Committee Recent Update

Our Boundary Review Change Committee began meeting in March of 2022 and since August 4, the Boundary Review Change Committee has met weekly for two hours. Kent School District has hired a part-time Boundary Planning Specialist Ella Hillard, who has been working closely with our Capital and Transportation leads on the location analytics software to create boundary change scenarios that guide committee conversations.

In September, the committee looked specifically at adjustment scenarios for elementary, middle, and high school boundaries. This work was driven by the committee’s core beliefs of equitable placement of student programs, not overloading Title 1/high impact schools, and keeping it simple. There is a need to clean up some parcel and neighborhood lines and boundaries that are out of date and do not make sense, but the committee does not see the need to make changes if it is not necessary.

As September closes and October begins, the recommendations will be finalized for all school boundary adjustments along with equitable educational program placement. The committee shared an overview of its work focusing on the first committee recommendation decision, moving sixth graders to middle school beginning the 2023-24 school year. This information was shared at a school board work session on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. The Middle School Model Committee, which has been meeting and working hard since April, and the Boundary Review Change Committee gave a joint presentation to review the progress made by both committees since last spring.
