Daniel Elementary hosted 9-1-1 Mascot Emery the Penguin’s Birthday Event

The Kent School District’s Daniel Elementary was the first school chosen to host a King County 9-1-1 educational event. The event was a birthday party for King County’s 9-1-1 mascot, Emery the Penguin. At Emery’s party, the mission was to increase student safety as well as student and family trust for first responders.
Daniel Elementary’s first and third grade students participated in the event, which included an assembly and games to learn when, where, and how to call 9-1-1. Several fun stations designed to reinforce these concepts included the Mural Station, which allowed students to work with an artist and help paint a mural on an exterior wall at Daniel, and the emergency vehicle station, where students toured police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances.
When asked what he hoped was the most important takeaway students would have from this event, Kent police officer Plunkett said, “when it is a good time to call the police, and to feel comfortable talking to first responders to tell us what they need or if something is wrong.”
