Greetings from Your New Principal
My name is Shawn Cook and I am honored to serve as the new principal of Carriage Crest Elementary. I am excited to join this incredible school community in partnership with each of you. My belief is that students flourish when schools work collaboratively with families.
My vision is to lead our school to continuous improvement, the development and refinement of student support systems, and continuing to foster a school culture that welcomes, empowers and ‘lifts up’ every student. Ultimately, I see our school as a place where staff and students love to be and where each one is growing and achieving to their fullest potential.
My Journey to Carriage Crest
My journey as an educator started right here in the Kent School District teaching grades 2-6 at Glenridge and Sunrise elementary schools. My last years in Kent School District, I served as interventionist where I worked with staff to build a structure that identified each student’s needs and provided systematic and timely supports to meet those needs.
I then had the opportunity to take a central office role, joining the Curriculum & Instruction department for Seattle Public Schools as program manager for district assessment. This gave me a unique perspective supporting all schools in a large district, providing adult professional learning, and partnering with some truly talented educators in supporting student and adult learning.
Over the last three years, I was an assistant principal in Federal Way at Sherwood Forest Elementary. This experience taught me how to better lead a school staff, develop effective student learning and support systems, and build relationships with students and families. I believe that relationships form the foundation for all that we do.
I cannot wait to get started here at Carriage Crest and to build on the great work already underway. I briefly shared some of my beliefs such as partnering with families and developing relationships.
This year, I will share with staff more about my core values and vision for Carriage Crest – what I call “The ABC’s of Carriage Crest”. I will be challenging our staff to really define who we are as a school and a school culture. The elementary years form an invaluable foundation upon which our students grow into their best selves. I believe this work matters. I believe that we owe it to our students to be collaborative, purposeful, and to continually improve as educators. In short, our students deserve our very best.
I look forward to meeting with each of you and getting to know our students. I thank you, in advance, for entrusting your child or children with us and for your partnership in this work.
