Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!
There is always something exciting about the start of a new school year and I look forward to welcoming our new and returning students. I am a true believer in KM students and the Kent community.
I grew up in Kent and have worked in our district as a teacher, instructional coach, and assistant principal since 1999. I could not be more honored to serve the KM community in my role as principal.
Starting with Remote Learning
I am sure most of you heard by now that our district will begin the school year with remote learning. I spent the first week of August feeling sad about not seeing our KM Royals, but I know that our district leaders, educators, and parent committees made a tough decision with the best intentions for the health and safety of our students and staff.
While everyone knows that online learning is not the optimal learning environment for many students, the KM staff is fully committed to providing a high-quality learning experience for all our students.
Royals are Strong
Our staff members genuinely worry about our students when we cannot connect daily and we value the time and relationships we develop when we are all together. We are stronger together. But there is also strength and resiliency that our students possess that nobody should underestimate.
At a time when so many have a crushing fear of the unknown and its accompanying anxiety, many of us have been struggling through shock, fear, anger, grief, and disbelief. What I would say to our students is this: You never let anybody or anything stop you before, so why would you start now?
Run the Mile You’re In
Olympic marathon runner Ryan Hall used the phrase “run the mile you’re in” to remind us all about focusing on the moment and circumstances in front of us and avoid lamenting lost opportunities or the challenges ahead.
While this year will be different from past years, I invite our students and community to join me in looking for moments of joy, innovation, and perseverance and celebrate our successes. KM will continue to celebrate and honor the most diverse student community in the state of Washington and help our students take on the responsibilities of college, career, family and citizenship.
We will share news and updates on our KM and KSD websites and student and parent emails so please stay connected. I look forward to continuing my work with all of you and wish you a wonderful start to the school year!
