  • HiCap Referral Process

    According to Washington state law, students may be referred for possible Highly Capable program services by a parent, teacher, peer, community member, or themselves. The referral process may include screening and/or further assessment and evaluation.

    Kindergarten

    Students currently enrolled in Kindergarten may be referred for possible Highly Capable Program services by a parent, teacher, peer, or community member. Referrals for current kindergarten students will be accepted during the fall. Parents and teachers may refer students using a Referral form available at each elementary school main office and on the Kent School District website. Students in kindergarten who are referred for testing will be administered the CogAT 7 at their home schools by a trained school staff member. Highly Capable services for identified kindergarten students will begin second semester.

    Grade 1

    Students in grade 1 may be referred during the fall for identification and possible services in the following school year. Individuals referring a child need to complete a Referral form. In addition, parents or guardians who would like to have their child assessed for identification and possible services need to complete the Permission to Test section of the Referral form. This form is available at each elementary school main office or on the Kent School District website. Referrals for current grade 1 students will be in the fall with Highly Capable services for identified students beginning the following school year. Specific fall timelines for referrals will be available at the beginning of the new school year.

    Grade 2

    All Kent School District second grade students are screened using the Cognitive Abilities Test 7 (CogAT) for eligibility and possible services in the following school year. No referral form is necessary for a child in second grade.

    Grades 3-5

    Students in Grades 3-5 may be referred during the fall for eligibility and possible services in the following school year. Individuals referring a child need to complete a Referral Form. In addition, parents or guardians who would like to have their child assessed for eligibility and possible services need to complete the Permission to Test section of the Referral Form. This form is available at each elementary school's main office or on the Kent School District website. Specific fall timelines for referrals will be available at the beginning of the new school year.

    Grade 6

    All Kent School District sixth grade students are screened using the Cognitive Abilities Test 7 (CogAT) for eligibility and possible services in middle school the following year. No referral form is necessary for a child in sixth grade.

    Grades 7-11

    Students in Grades 7-11 may be referred during the spring for eligibility and possible services in the following school year. Individuals referring a child need to complete a Referral Form. In addition, parents or guardians who would like to have their child assessed for eligibility and possible services need to complete the Permission to Test section of the Referral Form. This form is available at each middle and high school main office or on the Kent School District website. Specific timelines for referrals will be available at the beginning of the new school year.
