Honored to Continue Serving the Daniel Community
It is with great pride that I write this welcome message as the newly appointed principal of George T. Daniel Elementary. I served as the assistant principal in 2019-2020, and I am honored to continue serving the Daniel community as principal. The 2019-2020 school year certainly did not end the way any of us hoped it would, but I hope you are all enjoying some quality family time and staying safe during these unprecedented times.
I am committed to continuing to lead our Explorer staff in the important business of teaching and learning. We work together to ensure all students have the skills necessary to be productive learners. I am also committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for all students. Our goal is to truly know all students by name, strength, and need in order to provide a high-quality educational experience. Part of this means doing the important work of educating our students on issues of social justice. As a school community, we are equally responsible for helping our students build their capacity to understand and confront racism and discrimination, as well as contribute to a society where justice and peace prevail. The Explorer staff looks forward to partnering with the community to continue this critical work.
Daniel Elementary was most recently named, for the second year in a row, a Washington State Recognized School for our work during the 2018-2019 school year for closing gaps for one or more student groups. Schools with this award serve all students equitably and improve outcomes for all students. These awards recognize the commitment and hard work of our students, staff, families, and community partners. At Daniel, we are committed to closing gaps through our focus on excellence and continuous improvement, creating access for all, and partnering with our community as we work to create a school where all children come to a place full of unconditional love and hope for a successful future.
I am also pleased to introduce to you our new assistant principal Zharina Angeles Luna who is joining us from Highline Public Schools.
“I am humbled and excited to join the Daniel Elementary community as the assistant principal," she shares. "I am passionately committed to student equity, as it is the reason I chose education as a profession. I believe in helping all students achieve excellence, both academically and socially, in order to prepare them for their futures. Lastly, I am especially excited to be in our diverse community and I look forward to engaging with our families and community members and learning from the amazing cultures that make this school so special.”
Finally, our Explorer staff is looking forward to welcoming our students to another great school year this fall! I know there are many questions about reopening, and I can assure you planning is underway for the 2020-2021 school year. Kent School District is engaging high school students, families, staff, and our community to develop a student-centered and equitable reopening plan for fall 2020. The Task Force will present a back-to-school plan to the Kent School Board for adoption during the August 13 board meeting. Continue to check emails and the Kent School District Web site for updates.
As your school community leader, my door is always open and I welcome your input. Please feel free to call or email me to discuss any concerns you might have throughout the school year. I look forward to working with you as a team to help each student at George T. Daniel Elementary meet their goals, build relationships, feel connected, and have a successful school year!
