Road-trip Through the Regions of

Washington State

A Webquest for 4th Grade

Introduction

You are going to be planning your road trip through the five regions of Washington State. You will need to calculate the distances and all costs associated with the trip. You will decide where you will eat, in which cities to spend the night and how many miles to travel each day but you must stay within a budget. Your favorite teacher has left you $2,500 to spend on the trip. He wants you to spend as much of the money without going over. You will need to find prices for airfare to your region, car rental prices, prices for a hotel, gasoline prices, prices for food and any entertainment you choose.

Your Task

Roles

You will be assigned groups of three. Each person within the group will be given a role to develop the "perfect" roadtrip for their role.

Person #1- enjoys fishing and other outdoor activities (would like to do some trout and salmon fishing)
Person #2- enjoys museums, shopping and festivals (would really like to see the capital)
Person #3- enjoys sports, hiking and canoeing (would like to do some windsurfing)

Planning

Your mission as a group is to plan a trip through the five regions of Washington State. The trip must take at least 14 days and no more than 18 days. You may camp for no more than 4 nights but you will need to buy your camping equipment.
Think of these questions as you plan your trip.

  • What should the group pack?
  • Where will the group stay?
  • What will this trip cost the group?
  • What will your group's daily schedule be?

Rates and Budgeting

While on this trip you will need to to find prices for Hotels, campgrounds, rental cars and any entertainment you chose.
You will need to use the following information to create the cost of your trip. All of your costs will need to recorded on a spreadsheet document. Create the document with the number of days your trip will take with the following expenses. Figure your expenses daily.

Food Rates
Fast Food (MacDonalds)..............................................$5/meal/person
Mid-Range (Red Robin)................................................$9/meal/person
Luxury (Black Angus)..................................................$15/meal/person

Hotel/Campground rates
These prices may be found using the internet, travel brochures, newspapers or by telephone.

Rental Cars
The rates on your rental car will be determined by the teacher. You can find a picture on the internet of the vehicle you would like to rent and the rate will be determined by the teacher (the rental car companies require a credit card for a price quote).

Gas
With cars there comes the need for gasoline. For this trip the cost of a gallon of gas will be $1.50. You may want to think about this when you choose your car.

Entertainment
The cost of any entertainment your group chooses needs to be recorded and you need to explain the activity.

Miscellaneous
You will need to check your groups folder for any notes from the teacher. These notes could be good (free tickets to a Mariner's game) or bad (a flat tire or you ran out of gas)

Process

  1. Begin by making a list of everything your character would like to do on your Washington State vacation. Order your list from favorite to least favorite.
  2. Each individual will be responsible for keeping track of materials used.
  3. Meet as a group. Create a group list of activities for the family to do. Compromise will be necessary. Plan the family's weekly schedule.
    • You will need to plot your group's route on a state road map. Use a website like Mapquest or Yahoo Maps to find your mileage.
    • Create a spreadsheet detailing your expenses.
  4. Individually each member of the group will keep a log of the road trip. In this you need to explain what you did on you trip and any problems you ran into as you worked on the trip.
  5. Create your group presentation. For your presentation you may want to use maps or charts. The presentation can be in the form of a skit, slideshow, puppet show, or some other form. Your group will make a presentation to the class.
