Introduction

You are a participant in one of the fifteen Winter Olympic sports. Your sport is in need of additional funding so you can successfully prepare for the games.

Your Task

Your task is to convince the Starbucks Company to contribute the needed funds to your sport so you can bring home a medal.

In groups of three, you will each have a job to research information to include in a report about the sport your group selects. This report will help Starbucks in making their decision.

Each member of the group will be checking out websites for the information in one area. Your report depends on having all the information so each member must do a thorough job.

Using the information from each team member each group will put together a report/presentation for Starbucks.

All reports will be presented to your class and Starbucks will make their funding decisions.

The Process

First your teacher will assign you to a team of 3 students. Each team will then select one of the fifteen Winter Olympic sports. There will be no teams doing the same sport.

Step 1: Tell about your sport.

Each team member will pick one of the areas below to research. When you click on the area you will find your responsibilities and tips to help you gather your information.

Expert- You will be looking for information to fill out the Olympic Fact sheet about your sport.

Advertiser- You will be creating an advertising campaign about your sport. Make it sound exciting and a good place to give the funding.

Historian- You will find information about your sport and write a history of it and its part in the Olympic games.

Step 2: Putting it all together.

After you have gathered the information completing your job. Your group will put the information together for the final report.

The report will be done on the computer either in PowerPoint or Word and will consist of:

•A fact sheet with the information about

•A poster (billboard) using word-art, images, text and other related graphics to display your sport. The poster should not be handwritten.

•A 2 page write up with a brief history of your sport. Telling the origins of the sport, how the sport has changed, how long has it been an Olympic event and how has our country performed in this event.

•A presentation bringing all of your parts together.

Some other places you may find information that is not on-line:

•Encyclopedia- you may need to look under "Olympics" or by the sport's name.

Evaluation

Your project will be evaluated in four areas. Of course it is important that you complete the entire project and that your information is accurate. Equally important is how you were able to work as a group to get the information and produce your report. Your presentation shows off what you have done and shares your learning with others.

The table below will help you see what is expected and will be used to give you a final score.
