Primary School
Ndaragwa, Kenya

The public schools themselves are poorly equipped with few books, not enough desks, and dirt floors. And it is very difficult, as well, to find qualified teachers. Many of the students walk barefoot over a mile to attend school.

Primary education is free. Secondary education is not, and Kenyans must sacrifice to pay school fees so their children can continue their education.

If natives can afford it, they send their children to private schools. Originally, they were mostly Catholic missionary schools; however, today there are various religious and non-religious private schools throughout Kenya.

At the end of the primary education, all students take an examination and depending on how well they do, they will either go on to a secondary government-aided school and a harambee school (public school) set up by ex-President Kenyatta.

The picture above is of an outdoor lavatory.
