Travel Journal Requirements:
1. A passport application filled out and signed by you. A passport is required when traveling to other countries.
2. Check a climate map to see what types of clothing you will need for your various destinations. Make a list of clothing and other necessary items that you will need on your trip. (Will you need a flashlight if you are camping on the savanna in Kenya?)
3. Prepare a travel journal for each area you visit. The journal should consist of one or more paragraphs describing the area geographically, what you liked/disliked about the area, who you met and their customs, wildlife, etc. You may include information about what you have seen, done, or learned. Remember, accuracy counts!
4. You have $3,800.00 to spend on your trip from the time you leave until you return to your home town. You must keep track of your daily expenditures and what you have purchased. See budget sheet. Running out of money in a foreign country can be scary, but with careful planning it can be avoided.
5. Write a letter home to a family member or friend telling them of your travels and what you have seen and done. Include specific information about such areas as culture, history, population, size of the continent, customs and traditions of the people, or interesting places you have visited.
6. You will fly to Cairo, Egypt since that is where you will disembark (get off the plane). From this city, you will complete an itinerary of which places/countries you plan to visit. You must choose 10 different areas/countries.
7. Trace your route on the map of Africa in red. Use a political map, one that shows the boundaries of countries. Be sure to label all countries which you pass through or visit. Neatly label and color each country. On a separate piece of paper plan your itinerary in sequence of places you will visit.
8. Choose 3 of the following options to include in
your journal:

(1 page) For example: Nelson Mandela, Jomo Kenyatta, Gamel Abdul Nasser, Anwar Sadat, Julius Nyerere or any other leader important to Africa. *Locate a current event story from a newspaper or magazine. Read the article and find where it occurred and explain in your own words what the story is about. *Find several African recipes. Explain how the food is prepared, served and eaten, and what the ingredients are. *Create a colorful drawing of an African Mask (use only authentic colors and explain what the mask represents and why they are important in the African culture) *Research a particular tribe (Bantu, Masai, Woodabe, Dogon or other) and explain their traditional ways of living and how they are different from the ways of American culture. *Choose an important crop in Africa (plantain, coffee, sugar, beans, peanuts, sorghum or other) and explain where and how it is grown. Draw a colorful illustration to include with your description. *Research African art and explain how it is different or similar to art in America. How does African culture influence their art? *Write a story using as much of the Swahili language as possible. |
