Martin Sortun Elementary School receives the National Distinguished School Award

Martin Sortun students, staff, and principal Martin Sortun Elementary School received the Washington State and National Distinguished School Title I Academic Achievement Awards for exceptional student performance in reading and math.

“We are very honored to receive this national award.  It’s the culmination of persistent efforts by a highly dedicated and talented team of professionals committed to their kids. As Martin Sortun Mountaineers, where Everyday is Training Day, we are now climbing our next mountain. That’s what we like to do,” said Principal Greg Kroll.

The Title I, Part A Distinguished Schools award recognizes schools demonstrating exceptional student performance or making strides toward better educational equity. Martin Sortun achieved exceptional student performance, significant progress towards closing the “achievement gap”—the disparity between student subgroups—and excellence in service to special populations of students for two or more consecutive years.

Each nationally distinguished school will receive recognition at the National Title I Conference in Long Beach, Calif., and $10,000 for use toward professional development, team building, research, and strategy development. State Distinguished Schools will receive $5,000 each for the same purposes.
