We have installed the new food composter, nicknamed by the Crestwood students as "The Big Pig". The Earthtub composter will be used to decompose lunch leftovers (We generate 75-100 pounds of waste each week). The leftovers will be placed in the "Big Pig", along with building agents such as wood chips and stirred daily. Once the tub us full, it will sit and "cook" for 3 weeks until the waste has turned to compost.

King County has donated 87% of the EarthTub cost in return for using Crestwood as a pilot site. An official dedication will took place in April 2004, Earth Day month.

As a part of the 6th grade writing program, all students were asked to create a name, slogan and drawing for the EarthTub food composter. Before the assignment students were given background information about food composting and viewed a video which demonstrated the way the EarthTub works. School Staff choose the 10 final entries and the student body voted on their favorite design which was “The Big Pig” slogan and picture designed by Roman Vinnikov. Roman received 4 passes to Enchanted Village for the 2004 season. The passes were donated by Covington Water District. Congratulations to Roman!

The ten finalists were:

Roman Vinikov
Nathan Herrick

Each day, students collect food waste from lunch leftovers that are placed in bEARTHa buckets lined with sacks that were donated by Weyerhaeuser. The sacks not only help save water by not having to clean the buckets everyday but also serve as a bulking agent along with the woodchips. Lunch leftovers include vegetables, fruit, pasta, cookies, bread, tortillas, cake, and lots of coffee grounds from the teacher's lounge. You could say that she is a lactose intolerant vegetarian! These lunch waste is weighed, documented, then placed in the tub. The tub is turned and mixed with the auger running. Once it is full, it will stand and cook for 2-3 weeks. The result will be wonderful compost that the DOP will be selling to sustain it's program. Hopefully we will be selling our first batch of compost at our plant sale on May 14th.
