 FBLA

Congratulations to Scott Berkley and Aaron Heyamoto from Kentridge, and Olga Lizunova from Kent-Meridian for qualifying and attending the FBLA National Conference held in Denver this past July.  The conference was a huge success with over 2000 students in attendance from all around the country.  In addition to participating in their competitive events and attending workshops, the students with their advisor, Lori Paxton,  had the opportunity to visit Six Flags Theme Park, see a Rockies game, and have dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe.  Congratulations to Scott Berkley for placing fourth in the nation in the category of Banking and Financial Systems!

FCCLA

Kentwood's FCCLA participated in a community service project for Children's Hospital on Thursday, October 21.  Twelve members attended a Holiday Auction at the Kent Senior Center.  They helped with room set up, decorating, centerpieces serving appetizers, waiting tables, auction runners, and clean up.

In addition the members are working in their after school meeting each week to create thank you gifts for each donor at the auction who gives a "gift from their heart."  (This is a donation without an auction item.)  On October 19, the members carved pumpkins for centerpieces.  The centerpieces are a cooperative effort with the FFA club who arranged flowers in them for the auction.

Last year the auction raised over $30,000 for the uncompensated care fund at Children's Hospital.  Without the help of the FCCLA members, this would not be possible.

FFA

The Kent FFA club and Horticulture class participated in the Puyallup Fair Landscape construction contest.  They have been participating in this contest for four years.  Each year there is a specific theme.  This year the theme was "pool ponds and waterfalls."

The students design two gardens using the current year's theme and then collect the materials and build the gardens at the fair the first week of school.  They have a very short time to develop the ideas and build the gardens. All the students including alumni are encouraged to participate in the garden construction.  Jeremy Bancel, Ashley Davey, Elizabeth Domby, Yev Onshchinko, Salvador Renal, Candice Kurka, Brent Ashton, Travis Kinne, and Amanda Wallace were some of the students who designed and built the two gardens.

Kentwood is proud to announce that they won Grand Champion for their tropical garden and Reserve Grand Champion for their formal garden!  They are already planning for next year's garden which will be "gardening on a deck."

Mark Prothero comes to Kentwood

About five years ago, when Shannon Henderson first started teaching Business Law at Kentwood, she had a father of a student come to the class as a speaker.  Mark Prothero was a public defense attorney and he spoke on what it takes to make it through law school and the importance of public defense.  Over the course of the last couple of years, Shannon's law class has continued to benefit from his visits nearly every semester.  He is one of those people who really invests in education.

His career, however, has taken a turn, because he became the most prominent public defender for Gary Ridgway in the Green River case.  Even during the busiest of times for him in the case, Mark made time for Shannon's class, and also made time to coach the swim team at Kentwood.  Currently, he has moved into private practice and has been giving a presentation, "Behind the Defense of the Green River Killer", to various educational venues.  Recently Mark presented to the University of Arizona's Law School and their Behavioral Science department.

Mark presented to Shannon's Business Law classes on October 11 in the Kentwood Performing Arts Center.  Students were able to ask questions.  Mark shed some very interesting "behind the scene's insights" into the entire case.
