 National Atlas

A very cool atlas of North America that allows the user to add all types of layers to the map being viewed, as well as including maps to download, print and interact with.  The map maker has many possible layers, with a variety of information available within each layer.

Historical Atlas of the 20th Century

Wonderful set of 20th century maps.  Many of them are interactive.  Excellent maps indicating change overtime regarding political systems, lifestyle indicators, population, religion, war, etc.  Also an interesting set of timelines show leaders, firsts, etc. around the world during the 20th century.

Teacher's note: Though this resource has great maps and information - teachers should be aware that the author of the site does have some bias in his various writings and evaluations and does ask for money to support his site.- Use this information with discretion.

The Historical Atlas of Europe: The Development of Europe’s Modern States 1648 – 2001 

Good political maps showing the changes in Europe control over time.  Short encyclopedia like information is included with each set of dates regarding the major events shaping Europe at that time.  Some information on some of the major figures shaping European history as well.

University of Texas – Library

This site offers world maps and maps of places of current interests. This site acts as a historical collection as well as a current collection. For example, they archive multiple editions of maps published by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. These older editions are of interest to researchers, and are not available anywhere else online.

National Geographic - Xpeditions

This site offers black and white maps for printing.

Gilder Lehrman US historic maps  

This site is excellent for U.S. History.  It has a search engine, interactive history, reference room (articles, court cases, documents, films, maps, music, speeches, timelines, websites, etc.), and resources by periods (exploration to the present) and topics (education, family, film, labor, legal, Science & Technology, slavery, women, etc.)
