The transition to kindergarten is a significant milestone for both children and their families. Kindergarten introduces a substantial shift in culture and expectations including more formal academic demands, more complex social environments, larger class sizes, and more transitions during the school day. Kent School District is committed to working with the community to foster successful kindergarten transitions for children, families, school staff, and early learning partners.
Kent School District is part of a regional Kindergarten Registration initiative with Seattle, Tukwila, Renton, Highline, Federal Way, and Auburn school districts. Registration in all seven districts begins on January 17, 2017. Registration packets are available at every elementary school in the Kent School District.
Summer Student Enrollment
At kindergarten orientation, families can enroll their child(ren) for the upcoming school year, ask questions, meet the kindergarten teaching team and other key school staff, tour the building, meet other families, and see the kindergarten classrooms along with many other fun activities. Some schools also have buses on-site to provide short rides allowing incoming students to become acquainted with riding District transportation. Kindergarten Orientation is held at all elementary schools annually between spring break and Memorial Day.
On the first three days of the school year, you and your child will have an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher as part of the state-wide WaKIDS program. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other. If your child has been in preschool or childcare, please consider sharing information you have received from the early learning provider. Also, consider sharing any assessment information you may have about your child. Your school will share information at Kindergarten orientation and will reach out to you during the summer to set up this meeting. Please note that while all other students begin attending classes on the first day of school, kindergarten students will not attend classes until the fourth day of school to allow time for these important meetings. Kindergarten students will begin attending classes on September 7.
Kindergarten Early Entry
Children must be five years old by August 31 to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten; however, if your child’s birth date is between September 1 and February 28, the Kent School District will work with you to determine if your child demonstrates the advanced school readiness skills needed to be successful in school.
