Parent Academy for Student Achievement
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the Parent Academy for Student Achievement (PASA)?
PASA is working to create a community in which parents/guardians and teachers collaborate to transform their child's educational environment, both at home and at school, so that all children can achieve their greatest academic potential. The academy offers parents 8 weeks of informational classes on how to access their child's education and ends with a celebration of success on the 9th week.
Which languages are PASA classes taught in?
Classes are taught in the top four languages spoken in each school's community and translated in additional languages, when possible. The language in which PASA courses are taught are based off of enrollment and availability.
Who should enroll in PASA?
The principal invites all families to participate. Childcare is provided for children 18 months to 12 years old.
How long is the PASA course?
The parent academy class is 9 weeks long, with one 90-minute class per week.
How long has the Kent School District offered PASA?
PASA was piloted with support of the Gates Foundation and the University of Washington during the 2012-2013 school year at two elementary schools. The purpose of the pilot was to determine if the content of the academy met the needs of participants. The material used to support the academy was purchased and then adapted from the Parent Institute for Quality Education.
What is a PASA facilitator?
A PASA facilitator is a parent/guardian, community member, and/or a current Kent School District employee that is interested in teaching other parents. The PASA facilitator receives initial and on-going training throughout the duration of the academy. The facilitator must speak the language and understand the culture of the participants represented in their class.
What is a PASA recruiter?
A PASA recruiter is a parent/guardian, community member, and/or a current Kent School District employee that is interested in helping the school's principal recruit parents and guardians to participate in the academy.
