Weather Delay or Closure Info
The decision to delay opening or to close school in response to weather conditions (e.g.,snow or high winds), is made by Kent School District Administration. Notification of any such action is communicated from the KSD via its website and local media, including the website.

Staff Training & Student Drills
Kent Phoenix Academy staff receives a variety of types of emergency training. Each year, KPA staff reviews procedures for responding to medical emergencies. Each staff member receives a copy of the KPA Emergency Procedures & Crisis Response Manual. All instructional areas have posted evacuation routes. Staff and students engage in a variety of emergency drills during the school year. The school conducts a monthly emergency exit drill. Once each semester the students and staff conduct an earthquake response drill. Lock-down drills in response to an intruder are held twice each school year.
Incident Reporting & Response
Should an incident (accident, criminal activity, or intruder) occur while school is in session, the KPA staff and students are trained to respond according to established policies and procedures. The safety of students and staff is the paramount concern. Any notification regarding an incident is normally made after the incident has been addressed by school district and public safety personnel. If the incident should require an extended response and/or the local media reports the incident, the Kent School District will provide appropriate information to parents and the public. Do not telephone the high school, staff at the school, or students. Such calls can create confusion and may aggravate an on-going incident.

If you possess information that will be helpful to school officials in resolving the incident, please contact KSD Security at (253) 373-7256.

Parental Response in an Emergency
  • Assure your personal safety first. Develop and follow a personal and family emergency response plan. Students will be cared for at school.
  • Do not call the school. Phone lines will be used by emergency personnel only and must remain open at all times.
  • Do not rush to the school. Wait for the school district to provide information regarding evacuation and pick up of students. Campus will be closed and parents will be expected to wait until ALL students are accounted for and authorized personnel begin the Student Release Process.
  • Prepare to arrive calm, patient and ready to follow school personnel's directions. Encourage other parents to do the same.
Natural Disaster Plan
  • School is the safest place for students during an emergency.
  • Primary role of school is to care for the safety and welfare of the students.
  • School personnel are trained to follow procedure, give instruction and guidance to students and are required by law to remain on duty during an emergency.
According to Washington State statutes, all public schools are to develop comprehensive safe school plans (RCW 28A.320.150). Consequently, the Kent School District and Kent Phoenix Academy have developed a plan that includes:
  • Preparation of emergency supplies.
  • Familiarization with the types of disasters likely to impact the geographical location of the school.
  • Methods of self-protection during and after a disaster.
  • Well rehearsed evacuation protocols, including the assignment of staff to specific tasks and duties, as well as the institution of methods of early warning and prompt evacuation
  • Institution of procedures to enlist aid following a catastrophic event (including telephone procedures).
  • A system of tracking the location and safe dissemination of children and personnel during a rescue effort.
