Photos

Below are the very basics of what you might want to do with a digital photo to get it ready to save for the Web. Of course, there are many more options than these - these are just the basics. This photo of a white lilac will be used as an example for each of the effects.

Crop

bulletChoose the crop tool to crop the areas
bulletUse the Aspect Ratio drop down menu if you want to print the photos a certain size.

Resize

bulletImage > Resize > Image Size
bulletUse Help menu to read About Image Size and Resolution

Fix Color Levels

bulletEnhance > Auto Levels
bulletEnhance > Auto Contrast
bulletEnhance > Brightness Contrast

Touch-Up

bulletUse erasers, magic wands, the smudge tool, etc. to enhance or alter the photo (none of these was done to this photo - they are handiest for photos of people)
bulletTry Image > Magic Extractor

Apply Filters

bulletFilter > Sharpen > Sharpen Edges is a filter I like to use quite a bit to define the edges of a photo.
bulletFor wilder effects see Filters and Effects. I used Filter > Artistic > Dry Brush here for fun but I'll use the previous version for the rest of the examples.

Apply Layer Styles

bulletTo use the drop shadow layer styles you'll need to first have a larger white background behind your photo. To do that:
bulletConvert your background into a layer. Choose Layer > New > Layer from Background. Rename the layer and click OK.
bulletCreate a new blank layer. On this layer...
bulletChoose the crop tool, select the entire layer and then drag outside of the photo on all corners.
bulletClick Enter.
bulletClick to select the layer with the photo on it.
bulletClick on the Layer Styles palette. Click the drop-down menus to make your choices.

This uses both inner (noisy) and drop (low) drop shadows as well as a bevel (inner ridge).

Apply Effects

bulletI would use either Layer Styles or Effects, not usually both. So, I'll revert back to an earlier version of the photo again to show this feature. Be careful when using Effects. They tend to create multiple layers and may not be reversible too far down the road. I usually do these as one of the last things.
bulletFor this example, I selected the edge with the marquee tool, chose Effects (palette tab), selected frames from the drop down choices, and then Vignette > Apply.

Other

bulletAdd text or other graphics to your photo

Save for Web

bulletClick the Save for Web button or choose File > Save for Web.
bulletChoose your options.
bulletSave into your Web folder in the images folder.

Put it in your Web

bulletOpen your Front Page Web. If your Web was already open you'll need to Refresh the images file to see the picture. If not, it should be already there.
bulletEither drag or insert it into your Web page.
bulletRight click on the photo to add a border > Picture Properties > Appearance > Border Thickness.
