Hooking up the Projector | Turning the Projector On | Troubleshooting

Hooking Up the Projector

Plug in the projector power cord.
For laptops, plug the cord that comes with the projector into the laptop (usually a blue color-coded area) and then into the projector. See photo below.

The student laptops may have the projector hookup on the side.

For desktops you need to unplug the monitor cord that runs from the monitor to the CPU (computer). The monitor cord should now instead go to the projector from the monitor. Then, the cord that comes with the projector should run from the projector to the CPU. The newer projectors have a blue cord. The newer computers have a blue area that corresponds to this cable. Find that area. See photo below.

Turning the Projector On

Lightware VP800 and VP800 Plus Projectors (these work with even the newest computers)
Turn the projector on. The on/off switch is in the back with a "1" (on) and a "0" (off). The power on the projector must be on for the screen to show. You do not have to turn the light on but always have the power on to the projector when using the computer.
Turn the computer on.
When you are ready to project your screen, press the red Power/Standby button on top of the projector.
You can adjust the screen focus and also the keystone effect with buttons on the projector.
Press the Power/Standby button to turn the lamp off anytime you are not directly using it. The projector uses halogen bulbs which burn very hot. Using them sparingly will also lengthen the life of each bulb.
When you are done, press the Power/Standby button to turn off the lamp and let the cooling fan run for at least a minute or two before turning the projector completely off in back. The bulbs can pop if they are not cooled first.

Lightware Legend and InFocus Projectors
The power is already on when the projector is plugged in so there is no "on/off" switch. The lamp goes on (and off) when you press the Power button on top of the projector.

Troubleshooting

For laptops: If the screen of your computer does not show up through the projector, press Function (Fn) and the F4 function key on the computer twice. The F4 key is the correct one for the Compaq laptops on the mobile teaching station. If you have a different model of laptop, it may be a different function key you need to press. Look for the picture of a monitor on your function keys as an indicator of which to press.
If the screen does not show up, also try checking the cables to make sure they are all securely connected. This includes the following cords:
From the computer to the projector
From the projector to the power source
From the computer to the power source
From the computer to the ethernet drop in the wall
For a desktop model, additionally check the cords:
From the mouse to the computer and from the keyboard to the computer
From the computer to the monitor
From the monitor to the power source
If, after you pressed the Fn and F4 keys twice, the laptop screen does not show up, go into Start > Control Panels > Display > Settings > Advanced and set the laptop to be the primary source and the monitor to be the secondary source.
If you press the standby or power button on the projector and the light does not come on try:
Depressing the button longer to make sure it is recognized
Checking the bulb to see if it is burnt out.
For Lightware VP800 and VP800 Plus: Open the front cover and look at the filament in the bulb. If it is broken, there may be a replacement bulb in the auxiliary spot that you can slide into place. If you use the auxiliary bulb, let your school tech specialist know that a new auxiliary bulb should be loaded into the projector so that the next user with a blown bulb has a spare bulb if necessary.
For all other newer projectors: There are no auxiliary bulbs in the projector (each costs roughly $300). To check remaining lamp life, use the projector remote control: Click the menu, arrow down to setup, right arrow, arrow down to service, right arrow, arrow down to info, click the select button. This will tell you how many hours you have on the bulb. Subtract this from the life of the bulb (probably 1100 lumens).
If none of the above helps, restart the computer.
If all of the above does not help, contact your school Tech Support Specialist or call the Help Desk at 7030.
