Software Approval and Purchasing

KSD Approved Software

KSD recognizes that effective instruction is supported by two types of software used for different instructional purposes:
bullet

Productivity Software - supports any curriculum and is generally known as a multi-purpose tool
bullet

Minimum Productivity Tools - included on all KSD computers purchased after June 2001

bullet

Recommended Productivity Tools - should be considered when purchasing supplemental productivity software

bullet

Productivity Software Purchasing Information - prices and where/how to purchase the above software

bullet

Content-Based Software - supports a specific curriculum and/or grade level

KSD/ITRC-Approved Supplemental Content-Based Software

KSD Software Approval Process

District Policy 2020 requires evaluation and approval of any content-based software. The Instructional Technology Review Committee (ITRC), is responsible for reviewing and approving any content-based instructional software that will be used for an entire school or program or across an entire grade level within a school as a supplemental curriculum support resource. Any software that an individual teacher buys just for his/her classroom as enrichment is not required to be reviewed. See list of approved Content-Based Software above for KSD- approved software and ordering information.
Kent School District has in place a process for software review by the ITRC. This process assures that:
bulletsupplemental programs support and do not supplant the district core curriculum and instructional program,
bulletmaterials chosen are of the best quality and value available, and
bullettechnology-based materials selected for purchase will install and run appropriately in the KSD technology network structure.
Principals and Instructional Tech Specialists are responsible for seeing that software purchased for their buildings has gone through ITRC review and approval.

Technical Considerations

When planning to install and use any software program, it is important to have a technical and instructional plan in place. The Tech Responsibility Framework may assist schools with responsibility assignments and major technical considerations.
