Please see Information for New Parents and Students, or contact Community Connections at (253) 373-7524 Communities in Schools of Kent Communities In Schools of Kent (CISK) formed in 2002 to bring new and existing resources to students in the Kent School District most in need of help to stay in school, graduate, and be successful in life. CISK believes that every student needs and deserves five basics:
In 2003, Communities In Schools of Kent (CISK) began providing on-site mentors to elementary school students in the Kent School District. Mentors develop caring and supportive relationships with students, while encouraging students to be successful in school and to set goals for their future. Today, CISK provides on-site mentors at six elementary schools Covington Elementary, Kent Elementary, Martin Sortun Elementary, Neely OBrien Elementary, Scenic Hill Elementary, and Springbrook Elementary. In 2007, CISK further partnered with the Kent School District to launch the Kent Performance Learning Center. The Kent Performance Learning Center is a small, non-traditional high school program located at the Kent Phoenix Academy, and is designed for students in need of a different learning environment. The Kent Performance Learning Center focuses students not just on high school graduation, but on education and careers beyond high school. CISK employs a full-time services coordinator at the Kent Performance Learning Center to assist students with any non-academic needs (i.e. food, housing, health, transportation, etc.) that may be barriers to their success. The services coordinator also manages college and career readiness programs for students, including a mentoring program, internship program, job shadow program, guest speakers, workshops, and field trips. CISK invites you to make a difference in the life of a student by becoming an elementary school mentor, high school mentor, or by providing a high school internship or job shadow.
